How to be a girl and not have your rights respected

“Education is the first thing. Education is the key to a better future and trains the leaders of the future. Education opens doors. Education is this…”

These are all phrases that we can say are 100% true and true.

And it’s true, but can they be applied for all boys and girls?

Unfortunately, the answer is NO.

In Tanzania, at least 120,000 girls a year drop out of school for various reasons (including teenage pregnancy and child marriage) – according to a 2021 World Bank report.

Just writing it makes me get goosebumps, it’s scary to see how many very talented girls leave school for reasons that they have controlled us, they have been forced. In addition, the government does not allow girls who become pregnant to study at secondary school. In this first episode we can already see how girls are deprived of a fundamental right of children: the beloved free quality education.

And if we are referring to the fundamental right to physical integrity the situation is really frightening:
40% of all women between the ages of 15 and 49 have experienced physical violence, while 17% have experienced sexual violence.
Almost 30% of girls experience sexual violence before the age of 18.
It is estimated that 44% of teenage girls in Tanzania have given birth or are pregnant before the age of 19
(Source: 2021 World Bank)

Their physical integrity has no value, it’s horrible how they can be treated in this way: they are GIRLS! And no girl or woman on this planet would have to go through this type of situation that would mark them for life. Here the first right resonates again: education. That they know that their body is theirs, that they feel self-love for themselves and that they know the value and the strength of his word: when a NO is worth more than anything.

I hope that in the not too distant future this panorama will begin to improve thanks to multiple organizations that work and watch over the rights of girls in Tanzania.
