10 Things you didn’t know or do know about Tanzania

Let’s continue discovering our beloved country of the red earth: our Tanzania.

Today we want to highlight some facts that you may or may not know about the country.

Let’s get started!

    1. Its capital is Dodoma although the most populous city is Dar Es Salaam (6,400,000 inhabitants).
    2. It has the highest peak in Africa and the highest independent mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro with 5,895 meters.
    3. There is the Serengeti National Park, one of the oldest and largest national parks in Africa with more than 13,000 square meters.
    4. The largest virgin volcanic caldera in the world is located in Tanzania. It is Ngorongoro which has 304 square kilometers. In addition, in it we can see the big five of Africa: Elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and buffaloes.
    5. The longest freshwater lake in the world is located in Tanzania, Lake Tanaganika with 677 kilometers. In addition, it is the second deepest at 1,433 meters.
    6. The Zanzibar Archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean, belongs to Tanzania. In fact Tanzania is the sum of this archipelago and the territory of the mainland that is called Tanganyika.
    7. 30% of the land, 365,756 square kilometers, of Tanzania are national parks, reserves and protected areas.
    8. Despite the fact that the Serengeti is the most well-known national park. The largest in Tanazania is Nyerere National Park which has 30,000 square kilometers of wildlife.
    9. Tanzanite, a blue and violet variety of the mineral zoisite, can only be found in Tanzania, in the Mererani Hills of the Manyara region in the north of the country, near Arusha, in the area of Mount Kilimanjaro.
    10. Tanzania has more than 120 tribes, although the best known are the Maasai the largest is the Sukuma tribe. In total there are more than 10 million, which implies 16% of the total Tanzanian population.
