Today and always they move the world

Within Miradas de Tanzania we have many heroines: they are our protagonists.

We think we have mentioned it a thousand times but they are an example for us. An example of struggle, overcoming, sacrifice… In Tanzania they continue to live by tradition, despite there being a constant struggle. And, unfortunately, the patriarchal society is still alive.

But today we want to focus on the steps that have been taken from a few years ago to this part and focus on the positive part. In most cases they are laws enacted by the Tanzanian government.

But that does not prevent these crimes against women from continuing to occur:

– In 1998,
the Sexual offences (special provisions) Act was enacted, prohibiting genital mutilation. This caused the number of cases to be reduced, but unfortunately it continues to occur today.

– In 2019,
the Supreme Court of Tanzania banned child marriage. Less than 4 years ago… a 14-year-old girl could get married.

– In 2006,
the Tanzanian high court concluded that the customary law on inheritance was “discriminatory in more ways than one”, but did not abolish it. Nowadays, women have a lot of problems when it comes to inheriting.

– In 2021,
Samia Suluhu Hassan, the current president of the country, was appointed President of Tanzania. Becoming the first woman to hold this position.

There is still a lot to do and a lot to fight for and we think that the foundation is still in education. To see the years in which these laws were enacted is terrifying… For all this and much more we want to be your loudspeaker and make known all your stories. Today, March 8th, and every day we want to pay tribute to our wonderful fighters.
